Specular Microscopy

What is Specular Microscopy?

It's important to remember that all our examinations are as useful as the professional technicians who accurately perform the examinations and the specialists who interpret the results.

specially designed camera system

It is a study designed to measure the endothelial cells of the cornea. The procedure consists in a sophisticated software and computer system that interfaces with a specially designed digital camera system to take a picture of the cornea and then count the number and morphology of the cells per square millimeter.

This exam is performed in patients with congenital corneal diseases (e.g. iridocorneal endothelial syndrome) or acquired corneal diseases (e.g. fuchs dystrophy, primary cornea guttata, aphakic or pseudophakic bullous keratopathy).

What is it used for?

The study allows us to evaluate the corneal endothelial pump function which maintains the cornea transparent and healthy. It is important to know which patients are at risk for endothelial decompensation after cataract surgery or any other type of intraocular surgery which could lead to a decrease in vision, beforehand. This will allows to know which patients are not suitable candidates for surgery.

Diagnostic Eye Tests

It is important to allow enough time in your schedule for a thorough eye examination. Typically, these can take 1 to 2 hours but may be longer if you require special testing. In all cases, please refer to our Clinic Guidelines

Key Points Summary
  • Endothelial Cell Analysis: Analyzes the endothelial cells of the cornea to assess their health and density.
  • Indicator of Corneal Health: Essential for evaluating potential corneal diseases and conditions before surgeries.
  • Non-Invasive and Quick: A quick, non-contact imaging technique that provides vital diagnostics without discomfort.
  • Pre and Post-Surgical Assessment: Used to monitor corneal health before procedures like cataract surgery and to check for post-surgical complications.
