What is Anterior Segment?

An anterior segment specialist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of anterior segment diseases. These include cataracts, infectious and inflammatory diseases of the anterior segment.

Signs & symptoms

At present, it has become very important to manage anterior segment diseases such as cataracts with a refractive focus or objective. That is why at Tijuana Eye Center our anterior segment specialists are also refractive specialists. This has resulted in precise and excellent visual outcomes for our patients.

The word “cataracts” scares many people because they think this equates with blindness. The reality is that cataract surgery is the most widely performed surgery in the world. Visual improvement is seen in the great majority of people with cataracts who have no other eye disease present. A cataract is a loss of transparency of the crystalline lens, which is situated within the eye behind the iris, which under normal condition focuses the images on the retina.

Treatment

The only treatment for cataracts is surgery. At Tijuana Eye Center, we have very experienced surgeons in cataract surgery, being routinely performed with an average duration of 15 to 20 minutes under topical anesthesia and without sutures. There are several types of intraocular lenses now available which permit both far and near vision. (see accommodative and multifocal lenses)
