What is Biometry?

The full name of the eye test is Interferometry Biometry which is designed to measure the spaces within the eye such as, corneal curvature, corneal thickness, corneal diameter, anterior chamber depth and axial length.

Inter what?

This study uses interferometry which utilizes a light source that is projected toward the retina and back to the machine and a measurement is taken. There is no contact with the patient’s eye, eliminating risk of infection, whilst the biometer detects the eye being measured, so as not to confuse one eye with another. It is performed in around 5 minutes.

Immersion Biometry

This diagnostic test is designed to measure the spaces within the eye such as, corneal curvature, corneal thickness, corneal diameter, anterior chamber depth and axial length. These measurements will permit calculation of the intraocular lens to be placed after cataract surgery. Immersion Biometry is the gold standard that along with Interferometry Biometry permits exact measurements.

The study is performed with the patient lying down, while a sterile cup is placed over the eye and filled with sterile water to surface as a medium so that the measurements can be taken. It takes around 10 to 15 minutes to perform the study.

Diagnostic Eye Tests

It is important to allow enough time in your schedule for a thorough eye examination. Typically, these can take 1 to 2 hours but may be longer if you require special testing. In all cases, please refer to our Clinic Guidelines

Key Points Summary
  • Precise Eye Measurements: Biometry provides accurate measurements of the eye's length and corneal curvature.
  • Critical for Surgery Planning: Essential for cataract surgery planning, particularly for the calculation of intraocular lens power.
  • Non-Invasive Technique: Uses ultrasound or optical methods to measure the eye, ensuring a painless experience.
  • Enhances Surgical Outcomes: Improves the precision and effectiveness of refractive and lens implant surgeries.
