What Is Angiography?

Angiography is a diagnostic exam where a contrast medium is injected through the vein and pictures are taken of the retina and its vasculature. Two contrasting mediums are routinely used: sodium fluorescein or green indocyanine.

Mediums

Of those two contrasting mediums, the first is used to capture the leakage from the retinal vasculature, while the second is used to capture leakage from the choroidal vasculature.

Characteristics signs can be observed in retinal and choroidal disease which can help differentiate one disease from another.

The Examination

The examination requires pupil dilation and takes around 20 minutes with fluorescein and 90 minutes with indocyanine.

Once the examination is finished, it is printed out so the retina specialist can analyze and interpret the results. According to the retinal specialist's experience and knowledge can evaluate hypo-perfusion (areas with loss of blood flow) with ischemia (which can cause liberation of toxic substances which can affect normal areas of the retina). The retina specialist will be able to detect areas contrast capture suggestive of haemorrhages.

It is important to note that this examination is as useful as the technician who correctly performs the exam and the retina specialist who interprets the results.

Diagnostic Eye Tests

It is important to allow enough time in your schedule for a thorough eye examination. Typically, these can take 1 to 2 hours but may be longer if you require special testing. In all cases, please refer to our Clinic Guidelines

Key Points Summary
  • High-Resolution Imaging: Fluorescein angiography provides detailed images of the eye's blood vessels.
  • Diagnosis and Management: Essential for diagnosing retinal conditions like diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.
  • Procedure Details: Involves injecting a fluorescent dye into the bloodstream to highlight the blood vessels in the eye during imaging.
  • Quick and Painless: The test is performed quickly in an outpatient setting, with minimal discomfort.
